In order to achieve the objectives of the project GEORISK, a series of specific activities and the appropriate time schedule are required, in order to ensure the normal completion of the project. In particular, the project will be implemented within five Working Packages:
Estimation of seismic risk for specific constructions – Application at school complexes in the region of the wider Eastern Corinthian Gulf
The main objective of WP1 is the development of an integrated methodology based on the most modern techniques for assessing seismic risk, determining and predicting seismic risk not on a scale of a wider region but on a scale of a building block or a building complex while taking into account local conditions and the particular characteristics of the structures. For the installation of the needed equipment, schools, that serve the objectives both as constructions and in terms of importance, will be selected. The pilot application will be in the active tectonic region of the Eastern Corinthian region and mainly in the urban centers, eg. Corinth, Loutraki, Kiato, Itea, etc. It also aims to form the appropriate anti-seismic background in the educational community, with the plan of providing information on a neighborhood scale. Finally, within the objectives is also the creation of infrastructure for the collection of macroseismic observations. These observations are collected in the context of the research objectives of the Geodynamic Institute. The efficiency of this infrastructure will be the result of the information provided by the public and the rise of the awareness of the population.
Tsunami Risk Assessment
The main aim of Working Package 2 (WP2) is to develop – for the first time in Greece – a systematic pilot methodology for both the tsunami hazard assessment and tsunami risk assessment, in order to evaluate the expected impact of a tsunamis, with testing in two selected coastal zones of the country. The systematic implementation of such tests may gradually provide replies about the tsunami risk level in the coastal zones of the country. The scientific methods that will be developed are of further social and operational importance as they will form the basis for providing relevant services to central and local civil protection agencies, local authorities, the insurance industry, etc.
In addition, a set of actions will be developed to raise public awareness for the tsunami risk as well as to inform the population on the relevant protection measures, since tsunamis, although rare event, are potentially destructive.
Pilot application of innovative seismic and geodetic methods at the Methana volcano for the assessment of volcanic risk
Μain objective of WP3 is the measurement of any potential volcanic activity and deformation in the Methana region by using pilot applications of innovative seismic and geodetic methods. The research aims to assess the volcanic risk in the broader area that may also affect maritime and air transport, in order to determine preventive measures. Even in the case of volcanic quiescence, the seismological and geodetic data derived from the permanent and temporary infrastructure will define the level of volcanic balance, hence the continuous (background) seismic-volcanic activity.
The WP3 actions aim to upgrade the existing infrastructure, plan and deploy new seismic and geodetic network, study the seismicity in the broader area as recorded by the new local network and apply passive seismic interferοmetry and geodetic methods.
Dissemination
The main objective of the WP4 is to promote and disseminate the results of the project. The project aims to disseminate its results to the community, to inform the State about findings that contribute to the protection of the citizen and to the upgrade of the services to the citizen, to inform the Scientific Community, to inform the technical world and to inform the local authorities in the project implementation regions. The dissemination of the results of the project involves the creation of an official logo, a website, a bilingual (Greek / English) brochure as well as the organization of two informative events.
Administration
The main objective of the WP5 module is to ensure the proper management of the project with detailed planning compliance in order to achieve the best scientific results and the maximum absorption of project resources without problems and deviations. In this section, the project aims to correct and effective decision making, coordinated monitoring, evaluation and certification of the work, detailed monitoring and management of the economic object, the widest possible – based on the publicity rules – project promotion and the existence of lasting and effective cooperation and active participation of all stakeholders.
